Scotiabank’s Money Finder Calculator

Scotiabank Money Finder: Infographic

It’s a powerful tool that not many people know exist: Scotiabank’s Money Finder Calculator. I was recently asked in an interview how I would design the learning module for this fascinating tool and how to market it to the general public. Below is my thought process to reach the final design layout.

Overview

Scotiabank was seeking a strategy to market the calculator to the general public. The calculator has been around for several years, but many people aren’t aware of its existence and the company wanted to advertise it to help people reach their financial goals. Part of the marketing strategy is building an infographic that easily reaches people who are experiencing financial struggles and looking for ways to save and manage their money.

Research

Understanding the economic landscape of the average Canadian was key to understanding the users who would benefit from this marketing campaign. Using research conducted by Statistics Canada, I was able to identify that nearly half (45%) of Canadians reported that rising prices were affecting their ability to meet day-to-day expenses. Affordable housing or rent become a topic of concern for nearly 4 in 10 Canadians (38%).

Understanding the User

I created a fictional persona named Jessica, a single mother of a 5-year old child who is trying to afford a home. Selecting this user persona was a way to help people relate to the character and the everyday struggles.

Understanding the Existing Design

I took a look at the existing design and practiced using it to get an idea of how people would use the tool and getting an idea of what the tool needs from a typical user to see its benefits.

Explaining How It Works

Along with designing the infographic, the assignment requested me to design a learning program for the general public to explain how the calculator works. The idea is to provide a supplementary aid to help people relate and learn as they use the calculator.
